Previous History:
On 9/7/06
H.R. 503, also called the
American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (AHSPA)
passed the House
Horse lovers all over the U.S. were ecstatic
that day. The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, House's bill H.R.503, introduced
February 1st, 2005 by
Representatives John Sweeney (R-NY), John Spratt (D-SC) and Ed Whitfield
(R-KY) won with overwhelming support.
Two amendments by Representatives
Goodlatte and King, intended to undermine
the bill and make it worthless, were
defeated.
The anti-horse slaughter bill
passed in the House
263 to 146.
This legislation prohibits the
slaughter of horses for human
consumption as well as the
exportation of live horses intended
for the same purpose; making sure
that no American horse is
slaughtered inside the US nor
shipped to be slaughtered abroad.
A similar bill is still pending in the
Senate.
Background info:
This legislation, a new version of the former American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act which gained 228 cosponsors in the House of Representatives
in the previous year, would prohibit the slaughter of horses for human
consumption as well as the exportation of live horses intended for the same purpose, making sure that no American horse is slaughtered inside the US nor shipped to be slaughtered abroad. The bill
was referred to the House
Committee on Energy and Commerce.
The bill passed 263 to 146 on
September 7th 2006. If a similar
bill pending in the Senate had
passed as well, it would have put an
end once and for all to the
slaughter of American horses,
domestic or wild alike. Click here
